It varies from person to person:

For some people, like those that pursue research, they are doing what they love the most (outdoors studying and animal, plant, or forest), figuring out way to make something go *boom!*, software and/or computer game devopment, art, etc.

For some, its because they have been raised their whole life under an environment (family, society, or culture) where that has been imprinted as the norm. Sometimes this conditioning can be "because you must work very hard in life" or "job status and money reflect whether your a success or failure".

For some, their career is used as an escape from dealing with relational and life issues.

For a very few, its because they are OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder).

What you've mentioned may be a downside to being career oriented and working obsessively. However, a lot of discoveries that benefitted mankind and the world were developed and thought of by these kind of people you're talking about. If it weren't for the relentless pursuit of certain people who worked obsessively for the development of medical cures and many other scientific and mathematical options to make so many possibilities happen, we wouldn't be how we are today. Yes, we may have loads of time for the children but when your kid is sick or needs to have emergency operation done, what would happen if anesthesia or other medicines were not discovered by these career obsessive medical people? There're always good and bad in everything.

This is exactly the situation where the saying;" all work and no play makes Johnnie a dull boy" originates. Some people will never learn no matter how many or what you tell them. Good luck and Happy New Year

Well, boo-fcuking-hoo for them. I'm obsessing over my career whether you like it or not. What will a relationship ever do for me? Nothing!
