At my prenatal apointment they showed us the chart that's used to teach new prenatal nurses how to check for dialation. It's kind of neat. they put their hand in your... space... and if they can fit one finger into your cervix it's one cm, all the way up to 10 cm. Then there is also weather your cervix has thinned out or not, which again they check by just feeling. It's not comfortable, especially if you're contracting. They can also use an Ultrasound though. I recently had some trauma to my round ligaments and they did a translabia ultrasound to peek at my cervix (which they have to do if your bladder is not full) and they were able to check and measure that way.

they put there fingers in you and feel your cervix depending on how many centimeters between there fingers (with one finger on either side of your cervix) is how much you are dialiated.
it can be uncomfortable but its not too bad.

He/She sticks their fingers in your cervix and measures the width with his fingers.

It is not painful just a little pressure.
