Less cruel actually. Ensures that the neck is adequately broken. Putting the knot in back might not do the trick, due to the range of motion forward and backward of the neck. Side to side, less range of motion....until after the rope does it's job on you.

it is typical for the rope to be positioned on the right or left side of a person's neck when hung, because to position it in the back could prevent the neck from breaking instantly.

that is the correct position to ensure a quick break of the neck versus hanging them from behind so they can choke on the tongue they just bit off.

For hanging, no. It snaps the neck when the victim falls, making for a quick death, or at least minimal "dancing".

That is the standard placement of a noose, it is meant to break the neck , instant death, instead of choking to death, a much slower and more painful death!!

as far as i know you want it to the left or right so it snaps
you neck..you dont want it in the middle.
