From the United States, you need a passport if you are just staying for a couple of weeks. If you plan to stay there more than a month, you need to get a visa.

Document wise all you need is a valid Passport for an up to 21 day stay, if you want to stay longer you can get and extension to 90 days on your passport at the Embassy, or you can get a Visa if you want to stay longer. I Just got back from Manila and Pangasinan in December 2006. All you need is your US Passport if your are going to stay in the country for less than 30 days. The Philippines is a very poor country. There are a lot of people who will ask you for money and a lot of them will use children to do it. The people are generally very friendly and kind to foreigners though. Always remember to keep your wallet in your front pocket and always be aware of your surroundings. Avoid travel at night especially in areas that are not well lit. Don't accept anything from anyone as it will usually result in a sales pitch about products or services that can be very aggressive. Otherwise, enjoy your stay in this beautiful country.
