I lived in the USA for a while and now live in Canada. I was born in Argentina and I've lived in Hong Kong, Kuwait, Italy and Germany too.

When you meet Americans outside the USA, they are ok. A bit arrogant, and they tend to cause trouble in night clubs and bars, but overall they don't behave too badly. Another thing is that they always want to be given change in US dollars, and it's hard to make them understand that if you're in another country, you will receive change in that country's currency. Beyond that and the fact that most are rather violent drunks, they are ok.

In their own country they tend to be much less friendly. They always assume you're a foreigner if you're not white, and their overall attitude is to question your motives for being in their country. In that sense, they are much less open than people in other countries, or at least the other countries I have lived in. Also, well, there is quite a bit of open racism in the USA. In other countries there is racism, but it is more muted, more subtle. In the USA you can have a gang of white kids screaming bloody murder at you and trying to harm you physically only because you happen to be a foreigner with a dark skin.

I lived there for nearly three years working for a major biotech corporation. My experience was not too bad overall, but I much prefer to live in some other country. Canada is alright, and Hong Kong was great.

I'm from Canada...so I usually think of Americans like us since most of neighbors are American. lol. But I think in general, a lot of people see Americans as stuck up and a lot more blunt racism exists in the U.S...but I think you will find that in any country. I spend my time in between the states and canada and I hear ppl think canadians are nicer than americans-but I think we're pretty much equal. We have a lot less violence though...so I think on the other side of the border it's true that Americans do seem to use violence as the answer more often than needed and there are the few that think they are the world's gift...but I like 'em!
