for example, i keep arguing with people about Slash being better than buckethead. being better than someone also includes writing ability, and feel. right?

Hendrix is definitely a great guitarist, i just don't understand why he's unanimously considered "the best ever." His style isn't really the bets. so i consider him overrated.

It demonstrates skill with that instrument to play fast with precision. Slash is great perhaps his "rifs" sound better to you than those you disagree with. For instance, hard rock vs. death metal, there is a difference. If you prefer one sound over another, I promise you that you probably like the guitarist of the genre you like better than another more skilled musician. Ever heard of classical guitar players. Like Ralph Machio in that movie Crossroads!

Yeah i've asked myself the same question. I think the feeling that you play with has just as much impact on your guitar playing ability as the speed with which you play. Or it should anyway. By the way i play guitar and i don't understand why speed is supposed to make you so good. I mean you could play really fast but play all the wrong notes so what would that do? I think speed comes with experience but the basics are most important anyway.

They are ignorant of what talent is involves to become just a good guitarist. A good guitarist can play fast or slow at the same level of talent. A great guitarist is one that can play anything fast, slow or both and make feel it.

Because it looks impressive when a guitarist plays faster, don't you think. It doesn't necessarily mean he is better though, just probably faster and more coordinated.

because it sounds waaay better. most people dont care about that stuff unless theyre really into a specific guitarist. most dont examine that type of stuff. You've got to consider that only dedicated fans really care about that kind of stuff.

Because they equate speed alone to being good. It is more than speed. It is quickly sliding on the frets and host of other things. To me, Stevie Ray Vaughn was the best ever.

speed does not nessessarily make a better guitarist....knowlege of scales and modes do....speed dont hurt...but playing with feeling rather than just masturbatory spazmatic speed makes a better guitar player

I agree with you. I think it really depends on the genre of music, speed metal is obviously all about speed.
