Have some sort of drawing type thing.
For every day someone comes in and buys from you, it gets them an entry into a drawing that runs for a week.
The prize could be a thing for 3 free sandwiches or one monster sandwich made THEIR way. Do it weekly if you have to. The chances are you'll have more people purchasing in order to win something free.
Seriously, people love free stuff (consider it a food lottery) and that would let them know you appreciate them as a customer. Post a flyer with that information on the outside of your deli and in the paper if that's feasible.

There are many ways to do this. Please be careful not to spend too much on advertising, as this can be very costly. I run a fruit and veg shop in Dublin. It is really a case of being there 24/7 when the place is open. Build up a very good customer relationship. Treat all your customers with 100% respect. Talk to them About themselves. Try to find out what interests them and talk to them about that. Ask them what they did last weekend. Don't tell them what you did, they don't want to know!
Most important of all, remember looking after your existing customers is far more important than trying to get new ones. People do talk. Business expands by word of mouth. That is the very best form of advertising. It is 20 times easier to bring back a person into your shop than it is to bring a new person in.

1. Dispense a 'friendship coupon' with every order. 50% off order for new customers only. This is how you get your customers to advertise for you and also create a win-win because they'll have something of value to give to friends. Once you acquire a new customer that way, they'll come back (hopefully)
2. Send a 'letter to the editor' in your local newspaper and advertise a 'special day'.
3. Plan a 'happy hour' day: (everything in the store 10% off during the hours of, say 4-6 pm on "X" Date), and issue a press release in the newspaper.
These are all free methods which only cost you an initial discount.

Do a database and collect clients names and addresses.
Start a Deli membership program and give your members rewards.
The key with delis is they get a lot of repeat customers.
Focus on retention than being seduced on new customers.
I highly recommend great books like Dan Kennedy and Mal Emery to help with your business growth and development.

101 Differnt Answers I can come up with, But lets just start with one. = Advertise.
Then instead of that word of mouth advertisement from how good your deli is and expect return customers. Get out and make yourself known at partys and games and local town events. Offer vending service for them. You get your business proffits there too, but you also get that Free Advertising.

The only true ways to promote business are by (1) advertising or leafet drop ...... and (2) continuing to build a great rapport and service to existing customers so they spread the word.
There is no magic answer ..... but highlighting that you are there is so important. Perhaps try a street board or invest in a neon window light to catch attention?

Referrals,referrals, referrals. Give each customaer your business card, or several. Have them write their name and ph# on the back. Then they give it to a friend to bring in. If that card comes back to you, the person who's name is on the back gets 50% off or a free sandwich or whatever. another idea is a business card fishbowl one winner each week gets lunch delivered for their office. Think of how many new people will eat your food in a month's time!

Leaflet the local areas offering something free with the leaflet, then exchange the leaflet for another £1 off their next visit.
In my sisters village their milkman ran a campaign to 'save the milkman'. he knocked on doors and offered the usual and played on peoples good will and understanding that large supermarkets are taking small businesses to the wall. Offer a friendly personal and local delivery to pensioners, send them a 'takeaway delivery style' menu so they can phone you the day before, and have all their things delivered in a nice (returnable) basket.

try a letterbox drop in your local with a free small sample pack of assorted procucts upon presentation of the flyer,this gets the customer into the shop and they get to sample your product at no cost
