It depends very much on your lifestyle. Are you away a lot? Or at home a lot? Cats are much more independent. Dogs are almost like a child. It's a full time committment as each will live from approximately 10+ years for a dog and 15+ years for a cat. Don't take the decision lightly. If you want to do daily walks with a dog, brush a dog, and play with a dog, then go for the dog. They are wonderful, loving creatures. Cats are there to do as they please and don't provide that much companionship. If you get a puppy or kitten, also factor in training. Do lots of research online and talk to owners of both before making a decision.

You should first decide how much time you are willing to devote and by time I mean per day then I mean "years". Which ever you get look at it as a life time pet not a throw-a-way pet.
Cats generally live longer and are low maintenance.
Dogs can be more fun and can travel well with you in the car, go for walks.. are more "there" for you so you won't have to feel like you are going everywhere alone... always a pal.. but the trade off is more commitment from you.
In dogs, some breeds are high maintenance.. more medical problems, more grooming bills, the amount of food they eat can even make a difference.
For cats, they don't eat as much but a calico can live somewhere between 22-24 years..
What part of your life are you willing to share?
Answer a few of these questions and you can then decide which is best for you.. a dog or a cat?

It sort of depends. Cats are more independent, but aren't as friendly towards new people. Dogs rely on you for their survival, and love to have social interaction. They will love you no matter what. I have dogs and they are fantastic, loveable, cute, and play with you. Cats would rather be by themselves. If you have a lot, of some free time, you should get a dog as a companion. If you are gone all day, a cat would be fine with that.

If you have the space you can get both. Please think about the basic care for the animals . Cats are more independent than Dogs. They can be left alone with food and a litter box for a few days.
A dog needs to relieve himself at least once a day.

Depends, A dog needs alot more attention then a cat, but a cat won't guard your house and family either.
