Pet rock. Low maintenance.

some fish can be low maintenance... don't start with goldfish, they are a LOT more complicated than people think, bettas are a good choice for fish.... they only need a couple gallons of water (i disagree with the teeny tiny bowls) & can live for 3-4 years (more if u take real good care) hermit crabs are simple, but good at escaping, make sure u get a proper habitat, or a turtle, the red-eared sliders are good starters...... rodents require LOTS of cage cleaning, they smell alot, so if u don't want to spend alot of time cleaning, dont get rodents, ferrets, etc.... a cat can be fairly low maintenance, they are more independent & ask less of ur attention than dogs (in most cases)..... dont get a bird, they are very messy as well, & can be noisy, & if not handled regular may become mean..... thats just a few suggestions to start with....

Just wanted to add from a h's comment, if you want a low maintenance pet, a guinea pigs is not for you. They require a lot of space (7.5 sq ft for one and they need to live in groups) They require daily veggies that are properly nutritionally proportioned. They require weekly cage cleaning and spot cleaning in between. Nail clipping, sac cleaning for boars, and can cause a lot in vet bills in the long run.

If you want an easy pet, get a stuffed animal. Every pet comes with its territory.

I agree with Matt-"a pet rock" It's maintenance free.

A "pet" is not low maintenance. (a domesticated animal kept for companionship or amusement)
That's why they are "pets". Anyone not willing to invest time or $$ into a "pet" shouldn't have one.
The lowest maintenance animal I know of is a barn cat.

For pets in tanks: a turtle, lizard, snake, or a spider

For pets not in tanks: a cat or rabbit

Frogs are fun, and there are exotic varieties that are colorful. They need to be fed crickets only once a week.
Hamsters, rats and gerbils are a possibility; I'd stay away from mice because their urine really stinks.
A cat is very low maintenance.
Turtles.

hamster are very low maintenance, put food in the cage every morning or so fill the water bottle up and change it every couple days,
but you want to pick them up and hold them a lil bit everyday so they don't become to wild
