Sharpguy is completely wrong. He's describing double sided, not double layer. A double layer DVD has a two layers of data on the same side. The laser sees through the top layer to read the bottom layer.

Double layer is like have a DVD on one side and a whole DVD on the other side. The media is coated on both sides of the DVD versus just one side, like CD and the 4.2/4.7 Gb DVD's. When you play CD or a regular DVD you must insert it with the media facing down (label facing up). If you don't it doesn't play. A dual layer will play one thing on one side and have something else when you play it "upside down". If you're thinking about getting a home dvd player that supports dual layer then thats the way to go. If you're looking at a computer DVD burner with dual layer then those are more expensive and you'll find that dual layer DVDs are quite expensive too. But they are backwards compatible and you still buy the regular single layer DVD (cd's, etc) and it will still play/record them.

I'm still happy and content with my single layer computer dvd burner.

Double layer dvds are 8.5gb in size, compared to 4.7gb on single layered dvds. Most of the dvd movies you buy are double layer, that means your home stereo dvd player has to be a double layer format dvd player.
