I had 512 mb of ram, so today I bought 1 gig of ram(its compatible) anyways when I was putting both of them in, I accidently put them in backwards. After I turned it on I heard kinda like a snap and then the comp turned off. I also smelled a lil bit of smoke. Anyways I found out I had it backwards, and put it in right. Now though, my keyboard, joystick, mouse, and display is not working. My video card fan is still working, and it still has colors coming out of it, but the display doesn't work. Also I have another video output (have no vid card plugged into it) and when I plugged in my monitor to it, the display still doesn't work (usually if i do this, the display shows but they're horrible graphics) any ideas on whats going on and how to fix it??

Sorry about your luck. The memory sticks have two grooves on them and the memory holders have two humps on it that matches the groove on the sticks to prevent you from install them backwards. I dont think its possible to get the end rails to snap on them backwards (because the memory stick will be sitting too high from the humps. Putting sticks in requires a thumb and one finger. If you have to use your entire hand instead of thumb to push them down, then you might want to rethink it through in the future. I've been working on computers 15 years and never seen an issue like that and not sure what all the consequences (on other hardware) could reach to.
When you turn the computer on, is it giving out a series of long beeps from the PC speaker? That means it can not complete POST (bios hardware check). The conditions that must be met before the system boots up, is there has to be a video card present, there has to be at least one memory stick in. It does check for keyboard mouse present, but that is not required to boot up. Only the first two are absolutely required. So if its giving out a series of beeps (telling you POST is failing) then that sounds like the memory sticks are fried and it can't read them.
If you see absolutely nothing on the display and it is not sounding any beeps, then I would think it fried your motherboard. I've fried a motherboard in my lifetime by something as simple as putting a new processor in that was rated higher than the motherboard supported (AMD 850Mhz Duron was highest it supported, I put in 1.0 Ghz AMD Athalon) and the board never worked again (no noises, nothing, just never worked again).
I'd at least try to find some different memory and test a stick of fresh memory in it. Perhaps do a reverse expermient. Take all of the memory out of it and try booting it up. You won't see anything on display, but if the computer at least beeps at you, then that will tell you the motherboard may have survived. No beeps is a very bad sign (assuming you have the pc speaker in the case hooked up).

I have nooooo idea how you managed to put the memory in backwards, it's physically impossible.
But regardless, you smelled smoke, so something obviously blew up, probably the memory, but it could be something a lot worse like the motherboard. All you can really do is take it in to a repair shop and have them check it out, well, that and send it to the manufacturer through the warranty. The warranty might be voided because you changed the memory yourself, but I think anymore most warranties allow that.
On a side note, anyone that says anything about your hard drive being fried is either trying to scare you, or has no idea what they're talking about. I'd be very surprised if anything is damaged besides the memory and motherboard. This is still an expensive screw-up, but at least your data is still safe.

the board may have been fried. i've seen certain cases where the stick of ram that was put in backwards, and that specific ram slot were bad, but not the other slots or ram. the first thing you should try it just leave the 512mb in there and take out the 1gb and see if it posts. if not you'll need a new mobo most likely.
and GL trying to return the ram, hopefully the guy you return it to doesn't notice the burnt/missing pins :p

It may be time for a new computer - the snap you heard was likely an electric spark that could have fried anything and everything in your computer. The best bet is to take all your drives, cards and ram and test them in another computer. If you are lucky and these work it may be your motherboard.

You probably fried your RAM and your motherboard. If you don't know how to replace it, I'd take it to a pro to have it looked at.

Lets go back to the snap. That was probably a huge spark that ruined everything in your hard-drive. No, really.
