My dryer runs but doesn't heat. I don't want to pay tons for repair service. Any self repair instructions that useful? Thanks

check the duct for blockage, or the ignitor may be bad.

The easiest thing to check is the two fuses for the dryer or breakers. One is for motor other is for heat. Often older systems have screw in type fuses in a switch box...open it & eyeball the fuses. If one is blown replave with a new slo-blow model. Very common. There may be two breakers if your electric is newer. Common cause of blowing fuse is over-heat due to clogged filter or vent...If that isn't it you can disconnect unit & take off back & check out heating element it may be burned open, get new from sears or patch up with a nut & bolt if open circuit is visible. Next call the man!

Just to let you know. 417 means it was made by Fridigare. Providing you have 230v to the dryer. My first guess is the thermal fuse. Next would be the element. This dryer is not a Diy project. They are difficult to disassemble and will make you crazy trying. It will cost between $175.00 to $400.00 depending on the problem.

I had the same thing happen and I called the repairman. He charged me $50.00 to change a fuse.
Dryers work on split circuits. One for the motor and one for the element. Try replacing the fuses before you call anyone.
The heating element fuse will usually go if you don't clean out the lint trap after each use. That's due to overheating.
If your element is shot, replacing it is quite simple too. Give it a try, what have you got to lose except the cost of a fuse.

well the others are right and wrong to tell you to check the fuses. the dryer will run on 120 volts, but to get heat you need 240 volts. if you have the 30 amp cartridge fuses, replace them both and be done with it. otherwise, the other will blow sometime soon, and you will have the same thing happen. if you have circuit breakers one of them has tripped, flip them both and you should be good to go. good luck, and happy new year!!

If it's electric: Pop off the top lid,Disconnect the wiring: follow the wiring to the rear, you'll find the sensors and thermostats, check them with a Ohm. meter or just replace them. Gas, the thermocouple is in front. Follow the "big tube" at the bottom, you should be able to find the 3/32? tube to the gas flow and replace it.

try buying a new heating element and if that does not work time to buy another dryer.

Could also be a limit switch or safety switch.
