Yes, you need something to strike the percussion cap hard enough for it to spark. I recommend a pair of vice grips to hold the bullet and a ball peen hammer to strike it.

the bullet goes off because the gun's firing pin strikes the primer (in modern bullets). So, if you want the bullet to "go off", you need another way to strike the primer. (that's the little round silver thing on the flat side of the bullet). get a pin, nail, etc... and a hammer, rock, etc... you get the idea. you strike the primer, it goes off, ignites the powder in the bullet, the bullet goes off. The bullet won't shoot, unless the case is stable... since the bullet is heavier than the case... so if you want the bullet to fly, you need to secure the case somehow (e.g. a vise or some type, etc). DO NOT DO THIS!!! You'll probably get someone or yourself hurt... or worse. This isn't really that aimable.

Hit the primer with a hammer and punch.
Now, for my legal disclaimer:
Doing so is about the stupidest thing a person could do. The cartridge case is brass (a relatively soft metal), which in a firearm is contained inside the chamber. The brass case will expand when firing, but only as much as the inside diameter of the chamber will allow it. Fired in the open (like in a vise), there is nothing to contain it, and most likely, the case will rupture and brass shrapnel will go flying everywhere. To quote the movie A Christmas Story, "You'll put your eye out!"

Hi:

Yes; it can by heat, electrical spark or something hitting the primer cap,

In fact I heard about a guy who cheated on his wife and accidentally kill her. Her friend went to kill him for it. She missed him while the guy mowing the grass around his house and the bullet embedded itself in a tree. Because of the noise of the lawn mower. He never know about. Then when he went to cut the tree down three months later. The chainsaw got stuck and when he applied more power to it . It shot the bullet out of the tree and killed him right than and there - it a true story .

In a another story; a guy put his hunting rifle on a wall mounded rifle holder on his fireplace , and he forgot to take out the bullets. Than two months later a fire broke out in his house, He escape the fire. But the fire heated the bullets in his rile hot enough ,so that it discharge, The bullets went through the window and kill him at where he was standing. it a true story - Go to show you it give new meaning to the old saying "something you forgot about; coming back to kill you" - In fact go to your local police and ask them about stories of bullets going off like that, be sure to tell them your doing a report for son school's project. I 'm sure they can tell you of stories like that and they can check out there other deptments for it for you.

Hope this helps

Heat, pressure, or impact on the primer. None recommended because the bullet will go in one direction and little pieces of the brass shell will go in every direction.

Yes....if squeezed in a vise, a bullet will go off. My brother put a 45 bullet in my grandfather's vise and tightened it until it went off. He was nine. Luckily all he did was blow off some skin around his finger and thumb.
