My friend is a violinist. If you let her listen to a concerto, once or twice, she can pick it up immediately. She can play pieces by Joshua Bell, some of pieces that aren't even on music sheets. She isn't a savant, she can function just like you and I. She isn't weird at all, but I wanted to know if she was gifted, or if she has good ears. Note :She's been playing since she was five, but she can copy notes by ear rather than reading music as well.

Also, she didn't learn to read notes until she was 12...So yeahh, she was playing by ear for 7 years so would that also include? I wanted to know if there was any kind of name for people like her that had ears that could pick up concerto's so fast?

practice, practice, practice she is probably use to hearing those sounds alot and can now recognize them when they are played.

Easy... if she really loves it... she could try to get some lessons from a actual teacher from a music school... It's not hard to see if someone has talent or not... From there, it's practise, determination and life consciousness what counts...
Usually, gifted in music means how skilled and talented you are... Picking up notes and play them suggest (personally) a natural skill to do something.. the question is what to do with that...
Responding you first question, I'd say it's the same when some people say how "beautiful" is a mathematical expression, or how "deep" is a certain photography or how "enlightening" is your favorite book... A bit of knowledge, open heart and mind and connection with the foundation of yourself and life

I think that if a person is gifted!!! They don't really realise it themselves. They pick up the music by ear!!!! I think your friend may be gifted. The way you put it, it does!!

well having a good ear is plays a part in being gifted....sounds to me like your friend is really gifted though, and i'm sure playing since she was 5 helps.lol

You just know, especially if you can play an instrument, sing, ect; by ear.

I would say what you describe is gifted.
How can you tell if someone is gifted in music? You know it when you hear and see it.
