In and of itself, art has no importance.
However...
1) Everything exists within a context. The culture, the historical period, the psychology of the individual who chose to create whatever is being called art is incorporated & expressed in the art. So the art peice reflects something of the moment of the time of its creation, a time that never will again exist. This point of view can show art to be valuable.
2)For most of human history, what we think of as art did not exist; figures, illuminations, frescoes were simply part of a wall, chapel or axe head - the seperateness of the decoration and the decorated is a modern point of view and perhaps that's where some of this question originates; as in, what about just the ____?
3) Art is a uniquely human phenomena (Lucy the Elephant etc. aside) and whatever is found exists by meeting of the human artist's mind and the human viewer's mind through the artistic medium. All art reflects some aspect of our common humanity - we can read poetry hundreds of years old & it can still make sense to us. We may choose to dislike, reject, embrace, whatever, but the art is there as a human product, and since we too are human the art reflects part of our own mind & our own life in a human created world, not completely different than any artist. (not even one crazy enough to cut off his own ear!)
4) Art is a form of expression; public, political, philosophical, religious. It is a way to speak without words, conveying a concept or feeling without speaking. Art supplies a very important function in this way, challenging the viewer to think/feel/respond about something in a new way. When seen in this light, art is so important that it is protected by the US constitution ( as a kind of free speech)
So, art is not important as some notion disconnected from the rest of life; art can have great importance as an expression of what it is like to be a human at this time of human history.
Just a few thoughts...

Art can be beautiful, I say can be because some people's idea of art does not mesh with mine. Art is a form of creativity, I think it can be a gift of creativity given by the creator. Art takes many forms: painting, drawing, dancing, singing, acting and so on. I do not worship art, and I can't say as it is sacred, but some art forms do encourage and aid in worship or ushering in the presence of God. All forms of art have value and therefore a measure of importance. People like to create, because we have a desire to be like our creator. And that is fine, as long as we realize our talent and creativity is given to us by our creator. What constitutes good religious art must be defined by the creator and the viewer, as I said in my opening sentence, what some call art may not connect with me. If your question about what religion I belong to is asking me what denomination church I attend then I am AG. Are you an artist?

Everything we do, everything we create has the potential for art. here is what art is:
Architects who design buildings, houses
Designers who design furniture, cars, computers, books, equipment, tools.
Filmmakers who tell stories along with art directors, set decorators, cinematographers, film editors, costume designers, special effects artists and the actors who play out their visual pictures.
Television programs, music programs, MTV
Art directors who design materials to sell products.
Photographers who tell stories of your wedding, births, family gatherings, important life moments.
Designers who design dishes, silverware, glasses, and all the kitchen equipment you use.
Pottery, sculpture, landscaping and the pictures on your wall - all the things we have in our lives that we live with every day - are created through the design and inspiration and hands of artists.
That's how important art is - "art it is a reflection of the society in which it exists," is the definition, but art also defines and tells the story of that society as well.

Art is an outlet for emotions. Art is music, literature, film, design, images, etc. Art is often a form of entertainment. Art also enhances thinking, inspires, and the abiliy to create art makes us human. Art is how we express ourselves. A world without art would be a world whithout creative expression. It would be a dull world if we had no dance, music, painting, MOVIES, cartoons, CLOTHING DESIGNS!!! Art is essential in many ways.

For the aritst, art is a way to express their emotions, whether positive or negative, and lets their creativity come out. Also, if you think about it, art is reflective of its culture and it definitely shows the trends in the world over large periods of time.
