I've got two picks.

Not many people will agree with me, but no one can deny the original Half-Life undeniably changed the entire computer FPS genre when it came out in 1998. Amazing graphics (for its time), sound, storyline, and the familiar live-action cutscenes raised many eyebrows. And I don't know how many people know this, but the original Half-Life was the father of dozens of other amazing games like Counterstrike, which all used the Half-Life engine.

My other pick would be the Halo series. From what I can tell, no other series has so many people either playing it, talking about it, figuring out the storyline, or awaiting vital spoilers to the next game, Halo 3. I originally thought that the relatively new studio, Bungie, would flop after its first game, but when it was released, I was stunned at the depth of the plot, gameplay, and not to mention the graphics. That was until Halo 2 came out, when my head asploded from how much of an improvement (if it was somehow possible) to Halo CE it was. From what I think, the only people who viciously dislike Halo are the ones who either haven't played it or like a game that's a little different than Halo. I won't be getting an Xbox 360 just for Halo 3, but I'm already getting an Xbox just for Halo 1 and 2, and I made sure the new computer I got was compatible with Halo PC =P.

My vote would be for any of the games in the Harvest Moon series. The games are so cute, fun, and addicting! Who doesn't wanna roleplay as a farmer and start a family without having to "start" a family.
