Hey, listen...I myself have 3 friends that have dyslexia.....but come on, it is almost 90% of people on here...

Jeez...I am stunned by some of the answers so far. I left school at 15 1/2 and started working in the city (London). I am now 42. Please believe me when I say that I can kinda get a grasp on who is foreign (to the UK) and who just has bad grammar and spelling. The biggest thing that shows up here is the their/there thing. Things have gotten a lot worse over that last 15-20 years....so no, I won't go easy.....I learnt, why can't they?

right there with you Leslie S, it really annoys that they will not use the spell check or worse still the SMS text talk, sometimes I do not have a clue what the question is... .

I couldn't agree more. The problem is that texting and chat rooms have produced a healthy lack of respect for the written language. What started as a timesaver has become a culture. I mean, boi has the same number of keystrokes as boy!!!!!!

There/their can be remembered by a mnemonic

'there' is about a place, ie here and tHERE, whereas 'their' is about people....some would suggest the letter I inside 'their' reminds you it is about people.

Yes, getting someone's 'message' is important but like it or not, society will make assumptions about you based upon your spelling. Dyslexics are up against it but have many tools at their disposal today, the rest of the txtmsgers are just lay-z!!!!!!

Most of the spelling mistakes can be classified into two areas:

1. Typos are usually obvious.
2. Abbreviated spelling which has come from sending emails and SMS on the mobile.

However, the grammar mistakes are so numerous. Singular and plurals mixed together is very common. The use of auxilary verbs like "does" is common.

A lot of incorrect grammar usage comes from "lazy speech" and lack of understanding of English Grammar. That is because, grammar is not really taught in school, and what is taught is only minimal.

Good luck

Totally agree - I am the worst speller in the world, but I always take the time to use the spell check. It's right there! It takes three seconds! My other pet peeve - how hard is it to figure out when a word is possessive and when it's a plural?

Then, again, I just pinned a quilt onto my quilting machine the wrong way for the fifth time in a row, so whaddaya gonna say?

Typing could be a problem. I am slowly getting used to the computer and I am in my forties. Ifind commas especially the upper ones are hard to figure out.W e are all different. There is a crosssection of people from different countries on this site with limited English language.Be tolerant.

All of us find some things easy and other things difficult. Spelling is just one of those things that is really tough for some people. And the English language is tough anyway. It often doesn't make sense.

When the English tongue we speak
Why is break not rhymed with freak?
Will you tell me why it’s true
We say sew, but likewise few?
And the maker of a verse,
Cannot rhyme his horse with worse?
Beard is not the same as heard,
Cord is different from word,
Cow is cow, but low is low,
Shoe is never rhymed with foe.
Think of hose and dose and lose,
And think of goose and yet of choose,
Think of comb and tomb and bomb,
Doll and roll and home and some.
And since pay is rhymed with say,
Why not paid with said I pray?
Think of blood and food and good;
Mould is not pronounced like could.
Wherefore done, but gone and lone -
Is there any reason known?
To sum up all, it seems to me
Sounds and letters don’t agree.

Leslie, Don't be so hard on everyone. Some of these kids are using this site to learn to type and read and figure things out.
They are learning the computer in a way that is fun. Interacting with other people. Then some are supposed to be doing home work and they are bored and just want to interact with someone.
Not on a personal level but just to talk, or vent is a better word for it. Helps me I know. Just for you babe I used spell check.
So you have to be nice to me.

Because this is the internet, not a spelling test, if you wish to critisice peoples spelling, allow me to point out that you made no fewer than a dozen grammatical errors in your post.

It is not all their fault ...some lefty liberal decided that kids should enjoy writing and should n't be corrected every time they made a spelling mistake...Diddums. The result being they did,nt know when they were spelling words wrongly. They now spell most words wrongly.

Ah, that could all do with typing skills as opposed to spelling. I've been through school (and university) and I still make horrendous spelling mistakes and grammatical errors when typing quickly!
