All fictional characters of animals die in the movies unless there are 2 things. 1, A desire, due to the box office, to make another sequal in hopes of further money in which case the character is resurrected as in King Kong 2 and Ellen Ripley in Alien , The Resurrection.

Well, according to the movie script, "Twas beauty that killed the beast." But I disagree. It was greed! That idiot (most recently played by Jack Black) took him out of his environment purely for the money he would draw. It's true King Kong and the blonde had a bond of love, but they both merely wanted to protect each other.

'Twas greed that killed the beast!

The poor animal was shot down by a heavy air force attack, because the owners of Empire State Building wanted him dead for climbing their edifice and damaging a few windows. :)
Happy New Year!

He died because after losing his family and being alone for who knows how long, he finally found someone to protect and love as a family member. When he felt she was in trouble he protected her and was killed in doing so. I think also that he just gave up living after being in a world that he no longer understood.
