Very exciting and it i thought it was very just interesting how macbeth just is so selfish and how crazy lady macbeth is and how unhelpful the weird sisters are. But i saw the play in chicago and did a HUGE school play on it and we studied him for like a whole year so after all i understood it. I think it was pretty good overall.

Macbeth was the first Shakespeare tragedy I ever studied. He had one major character flaw that colored every action. As with all of Shakespeare's tragedies he lets you figure out the main flaw and lets the other characters point it out both to him(or her) and to the viewer (or reader) many times throughout the play. Shakespeare's writing has withstood the test of time because his stories are timeless if you can read beyond the language they are written in. Although the language is both lyrical and beautiful in it's own right. If you are having a hard time with it I recommend reviewing the Cliffnotes on the play.

Macbeth starts off being portrayed as a hero, having led King Duncan's forces successfully in battle, and hence will get a new title. The witches flatter his ego by telling him of the titles he will accrue - more than he could ever have hoped - and that he will become king, ultimately.

From then on, Macbeth and his wife, Lady Macbeth become 'evil', and pursue the witches' prediction, and plot to kill Duncan. They have become greedy from the prediction. The play then follows their corruption, the murders they commit, and their ultimate downfall. They first kill the King at his visit to their castle. Macbeth becomes king - the prophecy is realised. Banquo too is killed to reduce the threat to Macbeth's kingship - even his once good friend is not safe.

Macbeth is told to be wary of Macduff and therefore decides he needs to be killed. An army is gathered by Malcolm and Macduff to defeat Macbeth. Meanwhile, Lady Macbeth has gone totally mad, consumed with guilt from her evil deeds and plotting. She dies, but Macbeth is not moved by the news.

Finally, the great battle starts and Macbeth is ultimately killed by Macduff. Malcolm becomes king, and order is restored. Good wins, and evil, corruption and human greed is slain.

If you want an interesting take on the Scottish Play (many actors feel it is bad luck to even say the name, even outside and certyainly inside of a theatre), read the book on Shakespeare by Isaac Asimov, the guy who did the science fiction writing.

He has a large work with a chapter devoted to each of Shakespeare's' plays, and the one on this play is especially good. He traces the history of the actual scottish kings, talks about the foibles and interests of James, who was on the English throne and for whom this play was written, as well as the dramatic structure of the piece.

There is also a very interesting book by Clare Asquith called "Shadowplay" in which she discusses Shakespeare's writings in the context of the religious conflict of the day, and again, her take on this play is also different and stimulating.

I recommend them both. And won't do your homework for you.
