Ugh. That's nasty. If you want to have sex with other people...get divorced. It's easy enough to do.
I absolutely 100% don't agree with cheating, whether you agree to do it with your spouse or not. If you can't keep to one partner, then don't get married. Marriage is between TWO people...not two people plus any other people you want to bring in. Cheating is a horrible, destructive, evil thing to do to a person, and it's no better if you do it as a couple.
That is a completely disgusting and repellent idea. Cheating is an easy way to destroy somebody's self-esteem and crush a relationship. Don't do it!

I can't believe that number is that high!
But then again, look at the divorce trend.
I've got what you are saying about it being a hidden thing, years ago. But I tend to question how much it even existed, though I know it did, somewhat.
I think with the way people question there marriage's to death, Am I really happy? Etc, Etc, It's no wonder they don't work. People are constantly tearing them apart themselves.
Nobody else has to put asunder, there is nothing left by the time the couple gets that far! Or maybe they don't, even!
Still, I am tending to think it is where the people's heads are at in the first place. They say it is safe within a very secure marriage. But where is that marriage at. It must be one of the only surviving ones!
I think in general, it is a bad idea. Ya can't just play. People are human beings. It could lead to just giving you're spouse away, with a bow around their neck, to another person!
Or even if not, it could lead to building insecurities in an otherwise secure marriage.
If you really love someone, everything you need is within that person. Actually, within yourself. Ya just want to share all of that with another person.
I think, not a good idea. Bring it to a higher level, not a lower one. Happy New Year!

nice try, swinging was popular back in the 60's and 70's as well. People just didn't get into others' business like Americans do today. However, I highly doubt that 50% of American couples have done it.

No. Swinging is in direct contradiction to marital state. People get married because they want an exclusive relationship and then there's always diseases.
Think your stats need rechecking. Hard to believe.

"It is written (Tob. 4:13): 'Take heed to keep thyself. . . from all fornication, and beside thy wife never endure to know a crime.' Now crime denotes a mortal sin. Therefore fornication and all intercourse with other than one's wife is a mortal sin." - St. Thomas Aquinas ("Summa Theologica" 13th century A.D.)
