It commemorates the willingness of Abraham (pbuh) to sacrafice his own son for God. The animal is sacrificed (usually one per family) and then its meat is distributed to the poor. Making the animal's death long and painful or wasting its meat is a sin.

And where exactly did you get that information from? We sacrifice an animal once a year on Eid at Hajj in recognition of Abraham. Even then it usually one animal for the whole house hold. Not every Muslim in that family sacrificing an animal.

first we muslems do not sacrifice every day
only in the first day of al Adha's ead
second the reason of sacrification is
when God ordered prophet ibrahim to sacrifice his son Ismaeal and Ibrahim began to sacifice his son the God ordered him to stop and instead of that God sacrfice him by geart sacrifucation
so we muslems do as god did

Not every Muslim and not every day.
A Muslim may sacrifice a sheep in a day in one day in a year distribute its meat for poor people. Please note that 40 percent of the mankind does not get enough protein.
I think your question may be re asked like that:
{why Americans scarified Japanese in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and why they scarified Vietnamese? and why are they still scarifying Iraqis?)
