Downloading music is not illegal, but if it copyrighted and they do not have a license to sell copyrighted music then yes it is illegal.

Bearshare is illegal.

Limewire is also illegal along with Ares and other P2P (person-to-person) sites used to download music or other copyrighted materials.

I'll make it all as simple as I can, but I know it's still going to come up long. A person goes and downloads a song legally or buys the CD. They then convert that CD/file into an MP3 file (if it needs to be converted) and puts it "up for sale" on sites like Limewire, Bearshare and the rest of them. Upon a request for that song to be downloaded, that person's file is then copied and given to the person who asked for it, but it can also contain odd source codes, viruses, and other odd things in the file. SINCE that person is not paying for the music themselves they are getting free music which is illegal. If the RIAA decides to crack down on the problem users of these sites could face thousands of dollars in fines or even small amounts of jail time.

Please, just do the smart thing and pay for your music legally. Sites and services like Dell Music Jukebox, WalMart, Napster, Rhapsody, Pandora, and Amazon all have great services to cater to almost all of your needs. They also have some of the best prices for legally-obtained electronically-transmitted music anywhere online or over computer networks. Just make sure you're obeying the law and paying for your music.

If Napster got slammed back in the day they will slam Limewire. Just watch.

Bearshare is one of the best filesharing program I have used. You can download it here: http://gisgt.com/sw/eng/file-sharing-7/bearshare-12-0-0-134249-13793.html?x=g2

You'll find any kind of file you need: music, movies, books, programs... everything!

Any of the sites where you can download copyrighted music, movies and software for free are illegal. This is how the copyright holders make their money. You can get songs for 88 cents each at walmart.com and others. This is pretty cheap if you think about. And you don't have to worry about it.

No, in general if you don't pay for music it is illegal. Unless it is freely available music with no copyright
