If you can smell gas, from inside the car...the risk of impending death is real. (The fuel line leak is a good theory.)

it could be a lot of things and he'll tell you that, and might look under the hood, run a whole lots of test that will run up the bill. personally find out when your last oil change was, make sure you change the oil filter.(make sure its on all the way i know for a fact that Walmart blows at oil changes, Sears is great) change out the air filter. check the plumbing around the engine, might not do anything but hey that's what a mechanic will do. easy way to check the piping is feeling them, if there brittle and ready to fall apart they should be replaced. i recommend doing this yourself. it would be cheaper and not hard. it also depends on the type of car the year, all cars have problems with them no matter how new they are, you can find out if your car have a malfunction via the web, i don't have the site handy but if you look I'm sure you ll find something, wither it being a malfunction or other people have the same problem as you. there has to be a forum you can get in ask lots of questions and get even more detailed directions.
good luck

ur not providing much to go on. do u have a aftermarket sound system improperly installed, and it's shorting out? gas has a distinct smell. smelling gas all the time is a no-brainer. u have a leak somewhere.
look under the car by the frame rails. if there's any dripping, or there's a wet spot, u have a gas line leak.
sometimes the gas tank can corrode and leak around the straps that hold the tank in place.
if this car is not fuel injected, u can easily cut the bad section of line out, and replace it with a rubber hose that is certified to be able to stand up to gasoline. if its fuel injected, the splice trick wont be able to be done...the fuel lines will be under too much pressure. they'll be under about 40 psi, and it will require an entire fuel line replacement...not cheap either because it'll have to run from the tank to the engine.
also check in the engine compartment. this happened to me on an '88 blazer. a fuel line developed a small leak by the crimped coupling. throttle bodies is still considered fuel injected because fuel is pumped to it under high pressure.
in either case, get ready to shell out some cash. avoid driving it unless its to take it to the shop....and no smoking; gas vapors are extremely explosive. 1 spark, bye bye...its crispy critter time.

Look under the car on the ground and see if there is a leak. It could be a seal on the fuel tank or an evaporative emiisions problem although this should set a code and turn on the light on the dash. Is your gas cap on tight?

The last crispy critter I picked up along side the I asked that specific question. Did it give you any warning? The answer was "No, not even a check engine light."
The tires were burned completely off the vehicle, the fire was that hot. Turned out to be the power cable to his added amp shorted out.

Say it seems like I can smell gas all the time...I am wondering if you can check my fuel line to see if there is a leak or perhaps another small problem that I'm unaware of...sound like you expect it to be an inexpensive repair.....go for it girl
