The timing chain or timing belt is always under a cover on the front of any engine I've ever worked with. So that would be the passenger side where the serpentine belt is on a front wheel drive car. $450 dealer job. Check the Gates Inc website for your engine to see if it is an interference engine that gets damaged if the belt breaks.

a cavalier has 3 engine choices; a 3.1v6 and a 2.2 4cyl. there are a few out there with a twin cam 2.4 4 cyl.these engines have timing chains, not timing belts. the chain is at the front of the engine (or rt side) of the car, housed in the cover directly behind the crankshaft pulley.

if you suspect you need to replace ur timing component dont attempt to do it if you dont know where they are located. only experience mechanics need to mess with this type of problem due to the engine may have to be dropped to gain access to the timing chain. this is because on front wheel drive cars there is not enough room to work. just look and see for your self. look at all the stuff that is crammed on the passenger side of engine. under all of that is your timing chain.

On the end of the engine opposite the drive end, running from the crankshaft pulley to the camshaft pulley.
