Can a compulsive liar get any better if they work on it by going to therapy, support groups and working on it themselves?

Please give me some hope!

In my life, there are 2 compulsive liars. My brother and my sister-in-law. My niece is - even as I speak - being trained in this "art". Both my B and SiS will lie when the truth sounds better. They will lie to a stump in the empty forest. They will lie even when they know you know. I confess I do not understand this and try to avoid them whenever possible. Also, they are both petty thieves. I don't know if these 2 things go together, but it sure is convenient for a thief if he/she is an accomplished liar.

Congratualtions for recognizing this in yourself. You have crossed a major hurdle. Yes, there is help available. Call the social worker at a local hospital, ask for the ph# to the state-run mental health center. The fees are based on your income. When you get your appointment, Do Not Fail to Go. Your life can become richer and fuller than you ever dreamed of. You will find your friendships and relationships with family have more depth and you will be happier. Isn't that what the Great Creator wants for us all? You have my respect...

Everyone lies. But to lie to benefit yourself is wrong. It sounds like you need counceling. It might be like an addiction. I was married to a liar. Compulsive...I don't know, but he too knew what he was doing. I just thought he had a low self esteem and was trying to show off at first. The sad thing was after I moved close to his family and friends...I found out that only lies came out of his mouth. He lost a lot of people because of this. You may too. You may think they don't know, but they are probably just putting up with you because they love you. That might not last too long. Get help and good luck to you!!!

Think about why you lie?

Are you afraid of or do you respect others more than you do yourself?

Why is that?

I have always said... I have no reason to lie to you about anything if I am not afraid of you or the consequences in being honest with you. It is also a control thing... Some people lie to have control of a situation that they otherwise feel they would not if they were honest.

Lying is basically control based fear. Deal with one and you'll deal with the other.

Good luck to you! and everyone you know...

yes - I used to be one. Sometimes I feel myself slipping into another one - I am now able to stop myself. It only happened though, after my hatred for what I was doing led to self harm (which anyway started as a part of my web of lies ages ago) - I finally realised how it could only lead to crap, and am sorting my life out. It can only be done if you're really determined to stop though.
