It has origin from the name of the first inhabitants of the region (nowadays Veneto) named Veneti, people of ancient Italy. They occupied the shore of the Adriatic from Trieste to the mouth of the Po River and spoke an Illyrian language. Friendly toward Rome, they came under Roman rule in the 2nd cent. B.C.
According to legend, Venice was founded March 25th, 421 AD, by native land refugees fleeing from the Goths and thus called Venetia. The old Latin name Venetia has the identical pronunciation as the modern Italian Venezia.
