Outdoorsy: I X-C ski, backpack, hike (as much as 40 miles/day), canoe and kayak.
Which state: When I'd been to all 50 states, Alaska was the one I was going back to the most often. So when I had the chance (my wife finished her school and residency), we moved up.
Specifically why Alaska over Texas: Over twice the area, infinitely more glaciers, salmon, moose, grizzlies, and caribou. I have hiked on a very well-built trail in AK for 25 miles without seeing anyone else. And that is guaranteed if you just go off trail. I can ski/hike right out my door and hike above treeline in an hour from a trailhead. I look out my window at three glaciated 10,000-foot volcanos across 20 miles of salt water. We have absolutely world class sea kayaking and inland canoeing options. Even our oil fields (Kenai, Cook Inlet, and Prudhoe Bay) don't smell like oil fields - they're still pretty clean, unlike West Texas. And it is never 110F
Texas' upsides: You don't need all the winter gear and clothing. It is never -20F. The state is much more road-accessible (not sure if that's totally positive). Your caves (on the TX/NM border) are world class whereas Alaskan caves are cold and wet (but offer the most virgin passage in the USA).
Texans are friendly. Alaskans more so. And helpful - I've stopped to render mechanic aid by the side of the road in TX for someone who was there for hours. No one in need of assistance would be ignored that long in AK.
Finally, how many people dream of, save for, and look forward for decades to a trip to Texas?!? It's a nice place, but for incredibly natural beauty and untouched wilderness, Alaska is "as far as you can go without a passport".

I would choose Alaska (it's toooo cold though), but if you absolutely love the outdoors CHOOSE Washington State. I used to live there and there is nowhere in the world that offers so much as Wash St. You will love it up there...you can make the trip to Alaska any time--wash st is the closest state to it lol.

I would reccomend Texas. There is no state income tax, which it a bonus, the economy is great. You could certainly find any type of weather you want, they get a lot of snow in the northern parts, not so much in the south. There are mountains, beaches, plains, tons of lakes, and dozens of state and national parks. Houston and San Antonio are both great cities (if you want a city) and have extremely low costs of living.
