Use a warm damp wash cloth and press it to the ear or a heating pad with moist heat. Take some Ibuprophen or tylenol, if it doesn't get better in a few days you may need antibiotics.

Actually, the best home remedy for ear pain, in addition to taking ibuprophen or acetamenophen, is to slightly warm vegetable or olive oil and put a few drops into the ear canal. The best way to do this is to run a teaspoon under hot water, then place a few drop of oil on the warmed spoon, then drizzle into the affected ear. Loosely place a cotton ball into the ear to trap the oil It is important to warm the oil because anything cold can cause dizziness, and may actually increase ear pain and headache. If you have recurrent earaches, and want to keep a few special ingredients on hand, you can make an aromatherapy oil that is very soothing. Mix together 2 to 3 drops each of lavender oil, tea tree oil, and chamomile with 1 ounce of olive oil. Rub the oil mixture around the outside of the ear or dab a cotton ball in the oil, and put it in the ear.

It depends upon why you have an earache, but the common reason is infection in which case hydrogen peroxide and then after cleaning and drying your ears do the following:

(old remedy to dry ear which inhibits infections)

take an empty toilet roll and put one end to your ear and the other to a low wattage lightbulb. The heat gently drys out the inside of your ear.

By the way, it might be worse than an infection so go see your doctor if it persists more than a couple of days.

Some earaches have to be treated both externally and internally, with earache drops for the ear and a antibiotic for the body. To fight the infection from both fronts so to speak.
You should really ask your doctor he will give you what you need.
I do not recommend the use of Hydrogen peroxide.

Is this a plain old ear ache or do you have an infection? I'd make sure before hand what is causing my ear to ache. If it's something like dryness that's causing it you can use warmed sweet oil and put 3 or 4 drops in your ear. I would also recommend using heat of some type to hold over/on your ear this will take away ear pain too. If you have an infection going or aren't sure ....go to the Dr!!!!

I have used Hydrogen Peroxide to clean out the ear and then followed it with a couple of drops of Lobelia essence and a couple of drops of Olive oil.
To administer the liquids/oils:
Lie on your side with the aching ear facing upwards. If both ears ache, do first one then the other.
Pour a little hydrogen peroxide into the bottle cap and carefully drizzle into the ear. Leave in for about 5 minutes. Then turn to the other side, onto a towel and let the liquid run out.
Gently dry with a paper towel. Do not push anything into the ear.
Drip 1-2 drops of Lobelia essence into the ear and then 1-2 drops of Olive oil.
This is not to be considered medical advice. I have used this on myself and on my kids successfully though.
NOTE: If you have any signs of a perforated eardrum (you hold your nose shut and try to sneeze and your ear makes noise), go to an ear doctor immediately. Do NOT put anything into an ear that has a perforated eardrum.
If you do, you can cause an inner ear infection that can be life threatening.
P.S. I have also used the 'warm onion' therapy. Cut an onion in 1/2 and microwave about 30 seconds. The onion should be very warm but not so hot that it burns your skin.
Hold the onion half to your ear with the cut side facing the ear. Put the other half on the other ear. Wrap a shawl around your head to keep the onions in place. Keep on until the onion gets cool.
Onions contain natural antibiotics (it also helps to eat a lot of them, and garlic, too), and the heat soothes the pain. When the onion cools, it draws out toxins from the ear as well as loosens debris through the 'vacuum effect' of the cooling.

There is a reason to why it's hurting. If it continues to hurt, it may be a good idea to bring the person with the earache to see a doctor. I bet they have an ear infection. Best of luck to you.

no please do not use peroxide. I made that fatal mistake. and ignore the other answers that were not so nice on here. if you have ever heard of someting called sweet oil you can get it at walmart or any drug store. pour out a teaspoon full of it. and warm it but very very little you dont want to get it to hot. and put it in your ear and place a cottonball in there to hold it in. it is an old remedy and it works. even my doctor tells me to do that also. sweet oil has been around for a long time. and good luck with your ear hope you feel better soon

Never put peroxide in your ear! You should go to the drug store and buy Sweet Oil. The pharmacist will be able to help you locate it. Warm the oil a little. You do not want to burn the inside of your ear. Put 2 drops of the oil in the aching ear with a cotton ball to keep it in. You should feel better in a couple of hours.
