This question is quite problematic. In it's origin joy is greater than mere happiness. Happiness is something that we all strive for. It is a fleeting emotion that is very circumstantial.
It depends not only on others and the outside world but also our own ability to appreciate occurences.
Therefore if you are in a positive state something otherwis insignificant can't make you happy.
Joy it would seem has something more objective, universal about it. Joy is a state that can't be reached artificially. Being drunk or high or anything like that can bring you happiness but not joy. Joy has a certain quite depth about it. A silent strength. It is perhaps more discreet and yet in essence much more powerful. The use of these two words in an indiscriminate manner has brought about such doubt in people's minds.
Joy is lasting and strong whereas happiness is a fleeting moment. Joy it would seem has something devine about it in the sense that it is lasting.
Happiness is more of the mortal world but it is our longing for joy that greatens our happiness. The less we settle for ephemeral happiness the closer we are to joy. (I'm not saying that joy is in heaven don't get me wrong).
To truly grasp and appreciate joy I believe that you have to have known great sorrow for what light is greater than that which stands out in the darkness? What hope is greater than that which springs amid despair?

To me, happiness is usually self-earned. But to have true joy, you have to think of others.

Joy is something that no one can take away from you. It usually results from something that never changes.
Happiness is circumstantial. If a candy bar makes you happy, after you eat it you wont be happy anymore.

I won't give you the text book, just my sense of it emotionally.
Joy is an immediate more intense feeling that occurs around something specific and special that happens in your life. It's an immediate thing and it's intense and short term.
Happiness is about a long term state of mind and your personal frame of reference. It's more about personal choice and how and what you choose as your anchor within your life.
It's a positive state of mind. Our lenses I guess.

i believe certain words have their own definitions with the user.
so i could answer your question but as i believe it would be my own personal response, i would feel this may not be a satisfactory answer.
For the purposes of the dictionary, these words are synonyms.
If you personally have no difference within yourself between these words, then there is no difference. However this does not mean that when others use these words they mean the same to them, as is with all language.
