If she doesn't care about something to touch, and just wants a pet that's *hers*, you might consider a Siamese Fighting Fish--they're not much more work than goldfish, and they're very pretty.

They need warm water (80° or so), but otherwise are low-maintenance pets.

i agree, bettas are low maintenance (goldfish die too easily, way more complicated than people think, trust me) & are way more beautiful, & only need a 1-2 gallon tank (don't get the itty bitty bowls, they are not suitable & your fish wont live as long) otherwise, with proper care (only 4-5 pieces of betta food 2ce a day) they can live 3-4 years, more if u take excellent care.... rodents require a LOT of cage cleaning, so avoid unless u want to get stuck cleaning.... same goes for birds..... or if she likes the unusual, get her a hermit crab or small turtle, they are pretty easy to care for (just watch those hermies, great escape artists! be sure to get a good home for them) i wouldn't recommend a lizard, they are really good at getting away from you, therefore lost, stepped on, etc.... therefore, ur daughter mourns the loss of lizzy..... for a starter i'd stick to a betta, hermit crab, or small turtle, & avoid rodents & birds
