The best bet for you right now is to do this: isolate the y out... and I assume you are talking about graphing the equation on x, y coordinates...
for example, you have x + y = 3
to isolate y, subtract x from both sides, so you get y = 3-x
to make up points, you have to just substitute numbers for x. For example, you pick 0 as x. What's y? y = 3-0 = 3. Pick another value for x... say 4. y = 3-4 = -1... and so on, then make a table like this...
y = 3-x
x , y
0 , 3
1 , 2
2 , 1
3 , 0
4 , -1
To graph: graphing means showing the relationship between x and y. for example, putting in a 0 for the x yielded 3 for y and putting in a 4 for x yielded -1 for y. you will have the points (0, 3) and (4, -1). Plot them. Use the table to get some more points and plot them! After you plot those points, draw a line thru them, and you have a beautiful graph! (of a line)
That was my example... I try to avoid doing your hw because it's your job... anyways, have fun plotting...
Oh, I have a trick for your second equation... watch closely...
x - y = 1
add y to both sides...
x = y + 1
subtract 1 from both sides...
x - 1 = y

You only need 2 points to graph a line, and the easiest ones to get are the points where the line crosses the x and y axes. On the x axis the y-coordinates are all 0. On the y axis the x-coordinates are all 0.
So for x+y = 5, let x = 0, get y = 5, so (0,5) is a point on the line. Similarly, (5,0) is on the line.
For x-y = 1, when x = 0, y = -1, so (0,-1) is on the line. When y = 0, x = 1, so (1,0) is on the line.

In order to graph the lines, rewrite each equation so that you have the y isolated.
x + y = 5
y = 5 - x
x - y = 1
-y = 1 - x
y = -1 + x
y = x - 1
