I grew up with black eyed peas for New Years Day for good luck. Another tradition is to make sure that a man is the first person to cross your threshold in the new year. A man is good luck, a woman is bad (sexist...I know but that's the tradition).

A friend of mine who happens to be Mexican adds another wrinkle to this tradition. She says that they send the men away (just out of the house) before New Year and give them some money (to be sure that they have some). They're allowed to come back just after midnight. For them, a man still has to be the first visitor (or person over the threshold) but he also has to have some money in his pockets. I like that.

I don't know why, but my mother always fed us corned beef and cabbage on New Year's Day for good luck. Some folks in the South eat black eyed peas for good luck. Sorry I don't know the history behind it. Happy New Year!

We leave a loaf of bread on the table over night on the 31st. My gramma used to do this to ensure that we would have an abundance of food for the following year.

A couple of foods: Hoppin' John (black-eyed peas and rice--yuck! I hate black-eyed peas. As my mom says, they taste like dirt.)

Also, greens (which I like.) They represent paper money.
