Well it's possible to have SOME of the characteristics but not others. To be diagnosed with APD, you have to have at least 3 of 7 characteristics, so someone could have just 2 of them. Also, one has to be at least 18 to be diagnosed with APD. So if someone is 17, but has all the other characteristics, they are just short of being able to receive an accurate diagnosis. Or, they might not have shown evidence of onset of conduct disorder as a child -- because evidence of conduct disorder before the age of 15 is required, one without such a history can't techically be diagnosed with APD

Everything has a beginning and an ending... Symptoms manifest, behavior manifests although they usually show signs all through there lives there usually is a break at one point that defines the condition.
I had a friend that was kind of normal most of our childhood but had his first psychotic break in his 30's after being diagnosed with cancer... It happens.
People although only some are actually born that way... some get that way over the course of there lives just like Jeffrey Dahmer. Born completely normal and over time, worked his way up to being a killer a rapist and a cannibal...
It is often a slow progression where circumstance and an increasing influx of not being able to deal with mostly social situations worsen the condition more and it becomes more prevalent with time and hormone changes.

Essentially being a psychopath is losing the ability to discern what is reality. It's not like turning a switch. You drift into it more and more until you can't see reality often enough to be most of the time.
If you are only missing what is real occasionally (like most of us) then you are not there yet. As someone gets worse but is not yet all the way there, they could be said to be on the edge.

Boundries are broken physically and mentally..
If you want to kill your boss...you're not a psycopath...
If you DO in fact kill your boss....then a boundry is crossed..
And if you stay on the other side of that boundry, you are on your way to becoming anti-social....
What keeps us from murdering and looting and the like?
CONSEQUENCES
when you no longer care about consequences, you are ON your WAY...but you may yet be pulled back ...
