You should worry more about getting back into the U.S., in which case you will need a passport.

Officially, you need your US Birth Certificate and picture ID to roam about the border area on the mexican side. you will be able to get back into the US by land with no problem until 2008, after which you will need a passport.

As of January 23, 2007, passports will be required for all U.S. citizens traveling to or from the United States via air, to or from Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean (with the exception of Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands), and Bermuda.

Yes prior to this coming January a birth certificate would do...you need to get a passport now.

you dont need a passport to get INTO Mexico, to get back to your country maybe...

last time I visited border towns only ID was required.
