No one really bothers to conterfeit $1 bills just doesn't pay. The star is normal if rare and actually makes your bill perhaps worth a little something to a collector, not much but some. If you want to know if a bill is phony just take it to the bank and they will check it for you. Of course if it is they will confiscate it and turn it over to the Treasury Dept.

i don't know much about canadian money, but American dollars all have various counterfeit protections... there's always a watermark of the president's face (whichever is on that particular bill) on the bill. In the higher number bills, there's a small plastic strip inside the bill near one of the edges. Also, there's one of the numbers on the bill that is written in metallic ink, so when you move it in the light it will reflect differently and might change colors. another one of the numbers usually looks like it has small lines going through it, but it's actually very small text... it says the number of the bill... for a $10, it says "ten" repeatedly, all the way across the number. The green ink on the back of the bill should be raised against your fingers... maybe not enough that you can feel, but if you scratch your fingernail across it, you can feel it's bumpy. The paper isn't really paper, but some kind of superheated fiber material... a lot of it is cotton, there may be some real paper in it... i don't remember what all it's made of, but that's why the counterfeit pens work... they'll appear a yellowish color on bills, but black on real paper. My mom tried to tell me once that the spiderwebby looking stuff on the front actually has a spider hidden somewhere with it, but i've never seen it, so i think she's lying. and there's a lot more security things that they haven't released... only the government knows because if they told everyone, people would know how to make their own counterfeit bills.

I have seen a counterfeit 1 dollar bills and it happens more then people think. They sell counterfeit bill pens at Staples, they work pretty good, but they are not 100% and another good way to check is to rub your finger nail on the coller of Washingtons pic, if you can feel the ridges on it then most likely it is the real thing.

Well, the $1 bill is rarely counterfeited so it's not likely that you have a bogus note. For details on identifying counterfeit notes, go to the Bureau of Engraving's website at http://www.moneyfactory.gov/
