I was 42 weeks when I had my first child, only 1 CM and 100% effaced. I ended up having a horrible labor and delivery. Was in labor over 36 hours. I should have had a C-section but did end up having a natural birth. My daughter suffered for it (has CP and developmental delay).

First pregnancies are generally longer so do expect a long wait. Then again, it looks like you may have an easy one. You're suppose to dilate 1cm per hour. If you are progressing at a good rate, then you have an easier delivery. Effacement is really important. You can dilate more right up to the moment your child's position drops. You'll feel it when that happens.

Ps. The only reason my doctor let me go overdue was because he said he didnt' want to risk a C-section.

Strong word of caution...if you are not progressing after 10 hours, demand a C-section. Don't risk the health of your child. My daughter went into fetal distress and aspirated meconium into her lungs. I wished I would have demanded a C-section. I'd take the pain anyday, as opposed to the many years of therapy my daughter has to endure.

I was 41 weeks and 1 day! I was also 2cm dilated and about 80% effaced for a little over 2 weeks! Talk about being uncomfortable! At least my baby came out naturally and was healthy. Good luck.

I was nine days late (technically my 42th week). I conceived using an ovulation predictor kit along with tracking on the calendar, so I was quite sure of my conception and due date. I had been 100% effaced, but not dilated for over a month. My delivery had to be induced, the baby never dropped, although I did dilate 3 cm the day before induction, and it ended in a c-section. My daughter had meconium, I got an infection, and her head was enormous (partially why she never engaged). I think she was little "over-baked". Hopefully if you get to 40 weeks with nothing, they will induce, rather than waiting any longer. Best Regards!

My first came 11 days early. I had no signs of labor starting at all- no dialation, effacing etc until the muscous plug passed. That night my water broke at 2AM and by 11:30AM our son was born. We went into the hospital about 5AM. Second son was 2 days late so you never know, and was 4.5 hours start to finish. Waiting for #3 now; due 1/9. If you want to help speed things along you can go for walks and have sex but make sure you get some rest too. Good luck to you.

I was 42 with the first, and planned c-sections at 39 and 37 weeks for the next 2. It sounds like you are in pretty good shape! But true, I've had patients walk around at 5 cm. for 3 or 4 weeks. Good luck!

38 weeks but I was induced. I was however already having small and regular contractions that I didn't even feel. Found out when I was hooked to the monitor before the Pitocin started. I was also 2 cm dialated at that time. You sound like you are almost ready. I'd say at least within a week. Good luck and pack that bag!

Yes, I was at least two weeks over my due date, and my first daughter was 9 1/2 lbs ! But thankfully doctors today don't wait as long to deliver babies. They can tell by the late term exams what to do.

The worst part about haveing a baby, is no doubt the waiting. With my first child, I was 2cm dialated from about 27 weeks. I carried her to term, and had her 2 days before my due date.
With my youngest son, I was 1cm dialated from about 38 weeks, and carried him about 2 weeks late (I was due Sept 27th, had him Oct 12th).
Good luck to you

I was at the same stage you are when I was 37 weeks pregnant, and I had the baby the day before my due date.
