I prefer Halloween, because I start at the beginning of October by dressing the yard up. First come the tombstones and the mechanical corpses that claw out of their graves when set off by motion, then the large, hollow concrete jack-o-lanterns that I rigged up with propane tubes inside, the fog machine under the porch that is connected to buried tubing that comes up in the yard at different places to produce fog that seems to come out of the ground, life-size animatronic skeletons that are again motion activated and are hanging in medieval torture cages I built from 1x1/2 furring strips, two life-size coffins with mechanical vampires that raise their lids and sit up, a spooky lighting set up with carefully concealed floodlights and strobes, and a sound effects unit that is wired to the animatronics with spooky music and sounds. Even the front gate is rigged to automatically open when someone comes near it. A lot of trick-or-treaters don't even make it past the gate.

We have a very special New Years Eve dinner with 3 other couples that we have been doing for 15 years. Each of us does part of the cooking: someone the meat, someone the starches and veggies, someone the desserts and beverages. We exchange presents because we are all with family at Christmas.

New Year. It has a meaning, and nobody is ringing the doorbell begging. A new year is a New beginning and everyone seems united for a few hours !
