sword of mana was actually quite good - it is a remake, and an expansion of the first seiken densetsu game, 'final fantasy adventure'
the golden sun games were decent as well, and brought back some puzzle solving that hasn't been seen in a good long time
pokemon games really are quite good - i'd go with ruby, sapphire, emerald, fire, or leaf
breath of fire and breath of fire II were remade for the gba, but III was the best - and is still currently only available on snes
phantasy star collection has PH I, II, and III - decent games, of an older era. unfortunately it doesn't have IV, the best of that series. but that's available on the recent release for PS2 sega collections.
zelda. the original game, the second game - link's quest, link to past/four swords, and minish cap are all on the gba, and are all good games. link's quest would be the weakest of that bunch.
final fantasy: Dawn of Souls. this two game cartridge contains the game that started it all, with the errors corrected. (second hand elements such as giant and were actually mean something now) also contains the second game of the franchise. extra dungeons are available.
final fantasy IV advance. my favorite game of all time. an extra dungeon was placed after you beat the game.
final fantasy V advance. i'm surprised at how good this game is. apparently something was added. i think it's more classes, i dunno.
final fantasy VI advance - those older members of the 'final fantasy generation gap' consider this to be the best final fantasy game to date. this game isn't out yet - set for release in February of 2007
mario: superstar saga is one of five RPGs that star mario. it would be nice if they re-released the first one, and put it on GBA.
final fantasy tactics advance is not an RPG, but a strategy type adventure. while the story is clearly geared towards a younger audience than can possibly have learned how to read, it's still a good game.
tactics ogre - the famous Ogre series goes strat. game does well enough
pokemon mystery dungeon takes another spin on how you play RPGs - interesting
harvest moon friends of mineral town is a game about farming. most people that like RPGs also rather seem to enjoy this franchise. there is a female version, called MORE friends of mineral town - in which you play as a female instead of the original male character
