Yes and black-eyed peas for luck. Cabbage leaves are also considered a sign of prosperity. Rice is a lucky food. The hog, (its meat) is considered lucky because it symbolizes prosperity.
This is all tradition just like making New Year's resolutions.
It's fun!

Yes! We used to do that, growing up. We loved it. Thank you so much for you're question, cause' I almost forgot that.
I think this is an official version, you are supposed to pull it, like the way you pull a wishbone!
And we used to, just for fun, call it a mop roll! I think it was really called a roll mop. Ya know, when you can find it whole with all the stuff, like pickled onions, etc. inside of it. From the deli.
We are not Jewish. I always kind of wondered if it was connected with the Jewish. But I think it is German in origin, not sure.
Oh, I really loved that. Now the idea behind it is connected with every culture, did ya know that?
Just like with soul food, it's black eyed peas. Ya take the lowest cost thing you have and eat an abundance of that, to remind all of the participants that frugality is a good thing, fills the belly, and there is always some money left to spare. And there is some of the Good Luck!
And I think there is real Magic attached to it, too!
There is lots of Love in Family traditions. Happy New Year! May you be blessed.

IDK about pickled herring. Could be true...or it could be a way for yo momma to make you eat pickled herring!
Now, I have heard about Hoppin' John, which is a mix of rice and black eyed peas (some other stuff, too, I'm sure) and eating greens on New Year's Day. The greens represent paper money and the Hoppin' John is probably, like, coins or something.

It is German and Polish tradition. Tearing Herrring and eating it at Midnight is supposed to bring wealth, health and general good luck all year.

Herring, black eyed peas, sausage & kraut...nonsense.
For financial good fortune, invest wisely during the year. Keep your portfolio diversified.
For good luck, use your seatbelt, and watch where you're going.
