Well it's necessary for those who listen to all kinds of music, me, and who have a lot of music, me. Like I have an iPod that holds 10,000 songs, and so a 1000 song holder would kind of be necessary for me, but too small seeing as I have 1217 songs in my iTunes library and soon to get more this second. So yes it's necessary, just maybe not to you.... at this time. You may want more music to carry around later. You never know.

Thats a question that can only be answered by you. I have a 60 gig ipod that holds around 15,000 songs and I love it. My mother has the 500 song model and that's perfect. You figure there are 10 songs on an album so hers holds around 50 albums. Is that enough? You might find yourself swapping music out from time to time, but that's okay with most people. Also videos take up more room and if you plan on using your ipod for that, you'll have to condiser it. Finally, the difference in price between 500 and 1,000 songs is only $50 and if you ever think you might outgrow 500 songs, better to spend the $50 now than have to buy a new unit later. Hope that helps! Enjoy the iPod - I can't live without mine!

IM happy with my 2GB iPod Nano, it hold 500 songs, right now I only have 143, so I dont think that one that holds 1000 songs is necesarry in my case. nut other people might have a larger selection of music.

Nanos - 2GB holds 500
4GB holds 1000
8GB holds 2000
Videos - 30GB holds 7500
80GB holds 25,000
Shuffles - 1st gen. 120 songs
2nd gen. 240 songs
All I would need is 240 songs. I have a 30GB Video and I think it is way to much, but I do use the video space and that takes up alot!

I've got 9000 songs on my iPod, hundreds of photos, plus several music videos, TV episodes, and a couple of movies.
It's all about how large your media library is and how you prefer to use your iPod. Me, I use the iPod in my car to listen to music, and to play videos on friends' TV's. If you're the type whose primary use for it is as music while you're jogging, a smaller, lower-capacity player may be more suitable for you.

Some people have that large a library.
The larger (video) iPods also allow for video (TV shows) downloads
In your case, you may be perfectly happy with a Nano.

I have over six hundred songs on my musical device, and well. I am still going to get more. One thousand is necessary for me, that is I am heavily into music. And I am listening to the Super Mairos Theme song right now... *chee chee chee chee chee chee chee chee chee etc* But if you only want 150 songs, get a smaller iPod or musical device... or look for one...
