I know this is hard to answer but if the movie went on longer who would you think the police suspect of killing Lester? Would it be Jane and her boyfriend because who told him to put her dad "out of his misery"? Or would it be Carolyn because of the gun she hid in her bedroom after discovering the death of her husband? Or would Ricky's dad ( the true killer) be found as the murderer?

The police arrest Ricky and Jane because of the videotape they had made with Jane telling Ricky to put her dad out of misery. If you watch the directors commentary they shot the scenes where Ricky and Jane are in prison and these scenes I believe these scenes were to appear in the beginning of the movie. Then as you watched the movie you would see they were wrongly accused.Sam Mendes the director said in the cutting room a different movie started to take form and went into the direction which is the movie we see now.

Iceman has it right. The original script had a lot more information in it, but would've made the movie ridiculously long. It started with a close up of a faucet dripping and then pans out on Ricky staring at the water from a prison cell. You can see that Ricky and Jane are in jail, but then it moves to the regular beginning of the movie. At the end of the movie, there are a whole bunch of scenes that were deleted including showing the trial where Jane and Ricky are sentenced. At the trial you can see Carolyn sitting with the Real Estate King holding his hand. Angela is flirting with the judge while giving her testimony. I believe they even mention that she goes on to join the cast of Baywatch and Carolyn marries the other dude.

The big kicker is a shot of the Col. Fitts back in his office looking at an old picture from the war. He kisses the face of one of the other men in his outfits and starts crying. This obviously points to his homophobia and why he killed Lester.

All this would've added to the movie, but I liked it just the way it was. Hope this helped!

In the original script, there is an additional scene before the bird's eye view of the suburban setting with Lester telling the audience he is going to die. It is of Jane and Rick in court, being trialed and I believe delcared guilty of the murder of Lester. Yet for pacing and probably because it is a bit much, it was cut out.

That is a great question. I would say Lester's wife because she was having an affair? She was going to the gun club? She certainly had a motive because Lester was tripping everyone out. I actually thought she wacked him when first I saw that movie.

I think Carolyn because she hid the gun in her bedroom! Why would she hide the gun considering she didn't kill him!

Great flick. It would always get back to Ricky's dad though. Forensics and all would win out over motive and hearsay.

The police probably would've suspected the wife first.
