Very easy. Observe his actions and see if he is doing things out of the ordinary. He may also say he is working extra overtime hours or spending longer times than usual to accomplish certain tasks that he would normally be done with by a shorter amount of time. Also snooping around wouldn't hurt...you never know what you'll find.

Don't ruin the surprise. Maybe he's planning something for you, I hate it when chics do that. They think they need to know everything and if he's working on this and you spoil the surprise it'll be wasted. If he wants to tell you he will, don't go snooping around trying to stick your nose where it doesn't belong. Why do you think most guys won't try and surprise their girlfriends? Because they are nosy and spoil it.
