Scrapbooking can be really fun (and it doesn't have to be expensive). I didn't think I'd like it at first -- perhaps I was "rebelling" a bit, since it's become a very popular thing to do -- but I've truly enjoyed it. The fun part is not getting all those fancy stickers and paper (unless it's on sale) ... make it a true "scrap" book. Find things from around the house to accent your pages, and have fun!

If you or your spouse get backaches, you can make a platform bed, because your box springs might be part of the cause of backaches.
If you have a big yard and a lack of storage space, you can build a shed.
If you have zillions of small objects and no place to keep them organized, you can build some small shelves, the right size for the small objects. Small shelves have an advantage over big shelves. They don't stick out from the wall as much, so you're less likely to bump into them in the dark, etc., and they're easier to attach to drywall because they don't put much weight on it. When people walk past big shelves they need a little more space, so any furniture near them has to be farther away than with small shelves.
Very small tables, such as end tables, etc., tend to be handy, but are often wobbly. See if you can find a good way to make very sturdy small tables that can be moved easily from room to room but never wobble.
Flowers are a hassle, because they die before you have time to replace them. Fake flower arrangements solve that problem. The trick is to make them seem real enough. But even then, they won't have the flower fragrance, unless you add something to perfume them or whatever. A really fancy design would automatically refresh the perfume periodically.
Maybe invent a gadget that gets rid of static electricity from your car without dragging on the road. It could touch the road when you stop, and lift back up again when you move. Maybe the lift could be from the wind or something.
The best way to decide what to make is to keep a list of what you need. Everytime you have any little problem that could be solved by something you could make, add it to the list. Then every time you want to make something, look at the list to decide what.
Don't make stuff just for the sake of making stuff. Be sure it's something you really want, to keep and use, not just something to make. When people make stuff just to make something, even if it's intended to be art, it usually turns out to be junk.
If you're a true artist, you already know it, and are already spending day and night on your art, because true artists can do no less. If you're just a wannabe artist, be realistic, and understand that talent is not something you can get easily. By focusing on stuff you can use, you will give your art a chance to improve. Because, using the stuff everyday, you keep thinking about it, and how to improve it. Improvements are the essence of art, because nobody has so much talent they can make something perfect the first time, unless they're just copying someone else's art.
I'm using just the word art to mean both arts and crafts. Because, in my mind, there is no clear distinction between them. There is a connotation that you don't need as much talent for crafts. But even if that were the real and only difference between the two words, there would be no clear place to draw the line between them.

You could sort through all of your just received Christmas cards, cut out little squares of them and make gift tags for next year. Punch a hole in the corner and tie a ribbon to attach to the gift. OR you could go to the craft store, buy a soft carving block and a gouging tool and make "woodcuts". You can then make wrapping paper, stationary, cards....it is so easy to do and really fun.

Tye dye! It's great fun. Candle making, fabric painting, making cards, collages, claywork, stencilling. Decoupage. These are all things I've done, can't think of any more at the moment, but I'll come and add to the list if I do.
Glass painting!

Go buy some candles. Candles are popular. Then paint them with all sorts of designs. Sell them and keep some for yourself.
You can paint flowers on them, guys will buy them for their girl friends, or their mothers for Chirstmas. Know your market.
