I have a stray dog who found her way into my yard. She has an eye infection and needs medical attention. I can't financially provide care for her at this moment, and I also have a very possessive, jealous lab-husky mix who is going crazy because this dog is in my yard! She's very sweet and used to people, and I don't want to call the pound because they will put her down before getting her the medical attention that she needs! I've called the local humane society shelters in my area and they all say that they don't accept animals from the public! I don't want her to die but she can't stay here ...

Do a search on dogpile.com. This uses several search engines at once. Or, contact animal rescue organizations. Even PetSmart may be able to provide some leads, since they work with animal shelters.

Petfinder.com may provide a no-kill in your area. The humane society will not take strays only animals being given up by their owners. This is because the pound is required to hold strays in their facility so hopefully owners will look for them there. As a last resort, you could say the dog was given to you, but you can no longer care for her because of her medical condition and then the humane society may take her, but they may ask for a fee, so check first.

In my area the county shelter requires that strays are turned over to them within 24 hours so that they can try to find the owners. The pound is generally the first place someone will check for their lost dog, so if the dog is at your home and your are not posting tons of flyers and found dog ads, they won't be able to locate their dog. If she is friendly and not people or dog aggressive it is most likely she will be adopted if her owners are not found. I wouldn't worry.

put an ad in the newspaper, describing her great qualtiys, and eye problem. Also state why you can't keep her. If shes for free, chances are someone will take her.
