Of course it matters. Look at it this way: the end is just a conclusion. But without the time that you spent before the conclusion, you wouldn't be able to draw the conclusion... So it matters.
And another sign that the end doesn't justify the means is the fact that the end doesn't matter as much as the actual road. It's not the destination that matters, it's the road. Because happiness is often found along the way.
You know that feeling you have before you go on a trip? When you come back from the trip you realize that you enjoyed the time you spent dreaming about it more than being on the trip.

Not in this case it doesn't...if you can't get to where you want to go without stepping on others, then you would be the kind of person that needs to be 'stepped on'...if you have the guts, determination and moral fortitude, you can do anything without the need for collateral damage

That question could be looked at in more than one way. Consider this; You know what you want from life and you are well on your way to acheiving it, but certain people keep putting obstacles in your path. Why they would do this is not really important, but it happens, and it's preventing you from moving forward. In that case, I think it's reasonable to step on them.
