Maybe you mean Tonya Harding, the skater who was disgraced after hiring someone to bash Nancy Kerrigan on the knee and eliminate Kerrigan as an Olympic contender? I know that Tonya Harding started skating very, very young, age three or somewhere around there, in a pair of used skates. She picked up skills like skating backward in a couple of weeks...skills that normally take children far longer to master. I have a sneaking sympathy for Harding, who came from an authentic working-class background and lived through chronic hard times growing up and training as a serious skater. I wish she hadn't allowed herself to get so desperate about Kerrigan, who had nothing like Harding's athleticism and individuality of style and probably wasn't all that much of a threat.
