The Romans named January after Janus, a god with two faces looking backward and forward. In Auld Lang Syne, we have a remembrance of things past, with a realisation they are past because we are moving forward, so in that way, it is very suitable.
Plus, it helps if you are pissed - and Scottish

trish: Personally, I do not like the melody ! I saw a cartoon, and it had a scene where the vinyl record playing the Auld Lang Syne dirge, on the juke-box was rectangular in shape (instead of rounded) ... giving the melody its dirge-like tune. Maybe this explains it !!! Anyways; Happy 2007 !!!

Only slightly, there's a bitter sweet feeling I get when I hear it. Like sadness that a year is gone but happy a new one is starting over:)

It is a little bitter sweet. It mostly reminds me of certain movies that I have seen it in, such as It's a Wonderful Life.

Admittedly a high order for todays generation who seem to have the attention span of a retarded gnat, but there you are.
