If it's sheer terror you're going for, get the original "Exorcist" with Linda Blair as the possessed girl.
If relentless agony is your thing, either the original "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" or the remake with Jessica Biel will suffice.
For B-movie horror, check out "Abominable." If you really appreciate B-cinema, you'll find that it's one of the best modern "B" flicks out there.
Gore hounds will find that "Dawn of the Dead" is perfect.

Silent Hill is a great horror movie, it's full of suspense and it is so very scary. this movie will keep you on the edge of your seat.
