if the ceiling has not been painted after the popcorn was installed or paint was not added to the popcorn mix at installation. if the home is constructed after 1980 it will not be ACBM.prior to this chances are good that it is. for a test wet a small area of about 6 inches square with a spray bottle to the point of dripping wait about ten minutes and scrape with a tapeing knife. it should come right off if there is no paint. put the material that you scraped off in a cup of hot water and stir it until the texture material is rinsed clear of the plaster coating. if the "balls" are a light brown ore pure white they are plastic or styrofoam and safe. if they are light grey and break up rubbing them between your fingers then you more likely have asbestose. either way it is not advisable to sand the ceiling. the dust gets everywhere and it is possible to create more of a mess than you need. it is leagle for you to remove asbestose from your own home without licence. disposal is at the discression of the landfill call and ask them how they would like you to prepare your waste. most likely they will want you to double bag it and place it in a barrel double bagged. there are some safety practice that should be observed if you would like mor info please email me OREOS40@frontiernet.net. Wheather it is ACBM or not if it does not contain paint to remove it consists of dampening the area with warm water waiting a few minutes and scraping it being careful not to gouge through the underlying papar or into the "mud" at the seams. one person with a cheap tank sprayer and the other on a ladder with a 12" taping knife can do a large room in just a couple hours.

Yes it can be removed but it is a very painstaking, messy process. The popcorn is done with a texture paint, it is not actually the drywall. Sand, sand, sand. Make sure you remove all the furniture and protect your floors. And most importantly, make sure you wear a mask.

Miss Mash is right. A lot of popcorn ceilings contain asbestos. It can kill you but it takes 30 or 40 years. In the U.S. it can only be removed be certified asbestos abatement contractors and has to be put into a hazardous waste dump. It costs a lot of money. Have it checked to see if if contains asbestos. Removing it will make dust that will be in your house for years.

We were looking at condos that had this hated popcorn junk on it, and our apartment had it too. I was told it can be removed, but its best done by a professional.

Apparently this junk has stuff in it that can really make you seriously ill. Proper ventilation and masks and protective goggles are a must.

I am sure it can be removed without damage, however sanding, sealing and painting would have to be done.

Like Mash said, you need to check asbestos first and it is for to test it's fire resistance. Then texture on a popcorn ceiling can be removed easily.

Yes. Just use a drywall knife or putty knife and scrape it off. It makes a mess though. You will have to touch up the drywall taping after you are done.

Yes.... but it's a lot easier to simply install something else over it. It needs to be chipped off in tiny sections by hand, and that will take forever and cause a HUGE mess...

My best answer would be to come in over top of it with dry-wall instead. Screw it in, tape and paste it, prime and paint....

Or if you prefer plaster and have the cash hire a professional and do it that way.... Its expensive, but not a job I'd do myself.

definitely. just get a large putty knife, or sheet rock mud knife and get to scraping. wear eye and lung protection, and be prepared to make a huge mess. you may end up with some nicks and scrapes in your existing sheet rock, but that is no biggie, just treat them before you repaint. after you scrape all the texture off, you will need a good palm sander with fine sandpaper to clean up the rest.
good luck.

yes, just put a spray bottle of warm water in one hand and wide scraper in the other and spray away.
there will be a mess, but plan ahead for that with tarps etc.
the ceiling was blown on with water and dried, therefore, do it in reverse.
