Darwin came up with "descent with modification" as a description of how mutations were passed along from parent to offspring, allowing organisms to change over time and evolve into other species. However, Darwin had no idea how it actually worked because genes and chromosomes had not yet been discovered.

Mendel came later, and was lucky enough to choose pea plants for his experiments with inheritance. Pea plants grew fast so he didn't have to wait long to see the results of cross-breeding, and these characteristics were distinct enough (flower color, for example) so the ratios of dominance and recessiveness were easily discerned. His simple mathematical relationships were a big clue as to what kind of physical mechanism was at work during inheritance.

Mendel was a monk and did not publicize his work widely enough, so it was many years later before the biological community rediscovered him and realized the value of his research to genetics.

Mendel and Darwin were contemporaries but Mendel was unknown in his lifetime... Mendel knew abut Darwin's research but Darwin had no clue about Mendel's. Although Mendel sent his papers to Darwin to peruse, Darwin never did so. Just how clueless was Darwin about heredity???? He married his first cousin!

well Darwin proved connection between biological examples, and Mendel studied genes in pea plants, so yes. Darwin did evolution with people, while mendel ( who was a hermit btw with a lot of spare time) did it with pea plants.
